Box Score The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team opened up its 2018 campaign on the road against Vassar College Friday, and although the Hawks played better than last year's outing against the Brewers, they couldn't overcome an early deficit and fell, 2-0.
"It was good to see some individual performances today, but against a team like Vassar, we have to be better collectively in how we attack and how we defend," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Mike Eckberg.
Vassar defeated the Hawks, 6-0, last season in a lopsided early season contest and this time around, SUNY New Paltz was determined to put out a better effort against the cross-river rival.
Ashley Ferry gave the Brewers the initial lead in the 12
th minute, knocking a shot off the left post and into the net. She added another about 12 minutes later, running on to a through ball played in just outside the left half of the box by Brenna McMannon that led to Ferry and Hawks goalkeeper
Megan Tornatore one-on-one just outside the six.
SUNY New Paltz limited the damage from there, but couldn't find enough chances to take advantage of to slice the lead. The Hawks totaled two shots to the Brewers 11, but came away with three corners in the game.
Tornatore (four saves) and
Angela Ratka split time in goal, as the senior relived Tornatore in the second half and recorded two stops in the 45 minutes.
Taylor Filippone and
Danielle Angyal tallied the Hawks' two lone shots on the day.
