Box Score New Paltz, NY -- In perhaps the most exciting game of its season so far, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer fell short to Bard College Wednesday, 1-0.
The Hawks kept their opponents on their toes throughout the entire game, especially in the final seconds. In the down-pouring rain, Danielle Angyal ran onto a through ball down the right wing and crossed a ball toward the middle, where SUNY New Paltz ran on and put away the pass into the back of the net. Unfortunately, the euphoria ended abruptly as the sideline referee held up his flag up, signaling offsides and wiping the goal and the hopes of a comeback away.
The Hawks kept the Raptors at bay for the majority of the first half, but Bard scored its singular goal in the 41st minute, enticing SUNY New Paltz to make a strong comeback in the second half.
"I was pleased with our fight in the end and the overall presence in the second half," said Hawks coach Mike Eckberg.
Angyal made SUNY New Paltz's only shot on goal in the 52nd minute, while the Hawks defense stepped up to allow just five shots on net, four of which sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tornatore deflected.
Senior Raven Blake stole the ball from Bard players on multiple occasions by displaying tactical footwork. Many opportunities for goals were created through SUNY New Paltz's four corner kicks, two of which were well played in by sophomore Jessica Levinson.
"There were a lot of great individual efforts, but obviously it was not enough to get a much needed result," said Eckberg.
The Hawks aim to secure a win in their next game against Manhattanville College Saturday, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. on the North Turf Field.
