Marshall Hits Double Overtime Dagger to Give SUNY New Paltz Men's Soccer 1-0 Win Over King's College

| By:
Box Score Wilkes-Barre, PA — With time winding down in the second overtime period Saturday night, freshman Pedro Marshall stepped up in a big way for the State University of New York at New Paltz men' soccer team.

Marshall, playing a career-high 43 minutes Saturday against King's College (3-3-1), won back the ball in the Monarch's defensive half, which resulted in a highlight strike from 30 yards out to solidify a dramatic, 1-0, double overtime victory for the Hawks.

"Pedro came in and had a massive impact on both sides of the ball," said SUNY New Paltz coach Kyle Clancy. "His finish was a deserved game winner for his performance. [I'm] just extremely proud of the entire team and the way they fought."Pedro Marshall GIF

The Hawks (5-2) managed just two shots in the first half against King's and with Coltan Goodwine hit with a red card right before the break, they had the tough task of playing with a man down the rest of the way.

SUNY New Paltz withstood the Monarch's pressure and even with starting goalkeeper John Guzzo (three saves) going down with an injury, sophomore Marc DePasquale stepped up to keep the shutout, backed by solid play from his backline of Sebastian Gordon-Somers-Archer, Luke Dole and Mikey Considine.

"To play down a man for basically an entire half and defend so well, still create chances and have a chance to win in regulation showed the type of heart and determination this team has," Clancy said.

Despite playing with 10 men, the Hawks still created chances on the offensive end. Their best opportunity came in the 85th minute after Kevin Doorley earned his team a penalty kick, getting tripped up by a Monarch defender near the right edge of the box.

Doorley stepped up and tried slotting his shot left, but King's goalkeeper Owen Geedey (five saves) guessed correctly and made the save. James Hennessy was there for the rebound attempt, but Geedey made the second stop to keep the game a zero.

Both teams ended up even again at 10 men after Zach Wolcott was given a red card two minutes into the first 10-minute overtime. Each team generated chances, but nothing too dangerous on goal and the second 10-minute period ensued.

Halfway through the second overtime, Marshall won the ball for the Hawks. Ryan Martinez found the ball, worked down the left half and rewarded Marshall with a pass about 10 yards out from the top of the box. The freshman wound up and sent a laser toward the right corner of the goal, giving Geedey no chance to make the save. The golden goal was Marshall's first score of his collegiate career.

"Once we got to OT we just felt really confident, especially with the numbers back to even after their red," Clancy said. "With more space and time, we built much better and established control of the game."

DePasquale played the last 35 minutes and made six stops with SUNY New Paltz's withstanding 11 corners by the Monarchs. King's also held the advantage on shots (19-10) with nine on target.

"We really struggled with their direct style and high pressure, and they made OT tough to establish rhythm," Clancy added. "But when we went down, we actually played more composed and did a great job staying organized and disciplined in the back."

The Hawks are back home Sept. 21 and 22, as they begin SUNYAC play against Fredonia State and Buffalo State at 4 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. To stay up to date with everything #NPHawks be sure to follow on Twitter at @nphawks, Instagram and Facebook at @newpaltzhawks, and subscribe to our Youtube channel,New Paltz Hawks.
