Box Score New Paltz, NY -- The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team fell short against Fairleigh Dickinson University Florham Sunday, 1-0 in double overtime.
The match was close; neither team had scored during the 90 minute game. Although Fairleigh Dickinson (2-6-2) spent much of the time in SUNY New Paltz's (1-6) box, the Hawks limited their opportunities on goal. Sophomore Kristin Lasker displayed strong defense, blocking the Devils' forward plays and made connections to teammates to increase chances to move the ball up the field.
After a scoreless 100 minutes, the game continued into the final 10 minutes of extra time, where the Devils scored their game-winning goal from the wide left side in the 103rd minute. Amanda Croce met the pass at the top of the six-yard box and got enough of a deflection to sail the ball into the back of the net.
Despite the loss, SUNY New Paltz coach Mike Eckberg was pleased with the way his team fought throughout the 100-plus minute match.
"I felt as though as the game wore on, psychologically we became more and more dialed in," Eckberg said. "I couldn't be more pleased and proud of this group, of how hard they fought."
Fairleigh Dickinson out-shot the Hawks, 22-5, nine of which were on goal. Sophomore Megan Tornatore saw a great deal of action, making eight saves in the game. Sophomore Monika Morasse had two shots in the first half, followed by sophomore Danielle Angyal, junior Nicole Sheintul, and sophomore Jessica Levinson who each had one.
"Obviously not the result that we looked for as we prepare for conference, but I could not be more pleased with where we are right now," said Eckberg.
