SUNY New Paltz Women's Soccer Take 3-2 Loss Against Smith College

| By:
Box Score Northhampton, MA – It took the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team until the second half to start playing against hosting Smith College Sunday, but by then the Hawks were looking at a 3-0 deficit. That didn't deter them from making the match a tight game, however, as two late goals by Danielle Angyal and Kaitlyn Connolly cut the score, 3-2, with about two minutes remaining. But ultimately, SUNY New Paltz ran out of time to knot up the score and fell, 3-2.

"Technically, tactically, psychologically and physically, we did not compete in the first half," said Hawks coach Mike Eckberg. "As a staff we were pleased to see how our team responded once being down 3-0."

Zufan Bazzano put the Pioneers (1-1) ahead in the 28th minute on an unassisted goal and again scored in the 55th minute to extend her team's lead. Aisling Keane added Smith's third goal in the 77th minute, as her shot deflected off a SUNY New Paltz defender and into the net.

"It will be critical to be students of the game, learn from our mistakes to improve our preparation moving forward," added Eckberg, whose team dropped to 0-2 on the year.

After the third goal, however, the Hawks started buckling down and created more chances on the offensive end. Angyal put away SUNY New Paltz's first goal with Connolly earning the assist on the play in the 84th minute. Then, Rachael Purtell played a ball into the box where Connolly cleaned up, touching the ball in the back of the net with just two minutes left in the game to cut the deficit to one.

Smith College out-shot the Hawks, 23-7, in the game and also held the advantage on corners, 8-2. Angyal led her team with two shots, while Jessica Fox and Purtell each had a shot on target. Angela Ratka and Megan Tornatore split time in net for SUNY New Paltz and combined to make 14 saves on the day.

"As a coach, I did not do a good job of celebrating the success that we had," Eckberg said. "It needs to be better."

The Hawks are looking to regroup and earn their first win of the season when they travel to Montclair State University for an 8 p.m. game.
