Box Score New Paltz, NY – Although its record didn't reflect it, the State University of New York at New Paltz tennis team had an impressive start to the 2018 season and was excited to go into its first scoring duel match of the year Friday against visiting SUNY Cortland. The depth of the Hawks was on full display, as they didn't drop a single match en route to a 9-0 sweep of the Red Dragons.
"A very strong, dominant all-around performance," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Rob Bruley. "Really pleased the way all three doubles teams played against strong opposition. All three doubles teams are starting to jell together. We were really on top of our game in the singles and really put our short ball chances away."
The Hawks held a non-scoring doubles tournament to start the year and then followed up with a duel match against RPI, which was cut short due to rain, before going up against regionally ranked competition in a non-scoring tournament at Vassar College. Through those matches, SUNY New Paltz has shown it can compete with the very best and as a group were looking forward to start State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC) play against SUNY Cortland (2-4 overall, 0-3 SUNYAC), which entered the match also looking for its first conference victory.
Laura Koob continued her hot start for SUNY New Paltz, as the freshman defeated the Red Dragons' Chloe Knapp, 6-0, 6-0, in second singles before teaming up with fellow freshman
Trinity Chow to defeat Knapp and Mia Hayes, 8-3, in first doubles. Chow also beat Hayes in first singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Courtney Koran and
Lindsay Haley went undefeated in fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Koran earned a 6-0, 6-0, win over SUNY Cortland's Cassie Special, while Haley earned the 6-0, 6-0 victory over Olivia Terry. Haley teamed up with
Victoria Zezula in second doubles to beat Isabella Arrigo and Rachel Sullivan, 8-1, while Koran and
Emma Messenger defeated Special and Tina Wertman in third doubles, 8-1, as well.
Zezula took the victory over Arrigo in third singles, 6-1, 6-3, while the Hawks'
Jenna Grandville earned a 6-2, 6-3, win against Wertman.
