SUNY New Paltz Women's Soccer Comes Away With Scoreless Tie on the Road Against Oswego State

Oswego, NY -- The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team played its third State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game this season against Oswego State Friday and came away with its first tie of the season, 0-0, following a double-overtime contest.

The game was intense from the get-go; senior midfielder Raven Blake made a shot on the Lakers' goal in the fifth minute. Oswego State (4-2-2 overall, 1-0-1 conference) then earned an opportunity on SUNY New Paltz's goal just six minutes later, but the attempt was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tornatore. It was the first of Tornatore's nine saves. Junior forward Annaliese Gorr recorded the second shot on the Lakers' goal in the 36th minute. Megan Tornatore GIF

SUNY New Paltz (1-8-1, 0-2-1) fell to Oswego State 2017, 3-1. A year later, the Hawks displayed their improvement, especially defensively in their box and the ability to remain aggressive until the end, including double overtime.

"Our back line did very well to provide appropriate cover angles and recognize their shape," said SUNY New Paltz coach Mike Eckberg. "It was a great commitment collectively today."

Where the first half highlighted the Hawks' aggression on their opponent's goal, the second half emphasized their defense. The Lakers out-shot SUNY New Paltz, 23-6, but the Hawks out-pressured Oswego State, never allowing the ball to slip into their net. Freshman defender Ciara Devlin never stepped off the field during the 110 minutes of action and played well defensively, continuously keeping loose balls out of the box.

The game drizzled into double overtime as both teams became desperate for a goal. Sophomore defender Kristin Lasker made the Hawks' last shot in the 97th minute, but aimed too high for a game-ending goal. The Lakers pushed SUNY New Paltz back into its own box, but couldn't penetrate the defensive line. Tornatore made six saves in the last 20 minutes of the game to keep the stalemate. At the end of 110 minutes, the score remained the same as it had in the first minute: 0-0.

"I was very pleased with their overall fight and commitment," added Eckberg.

The Hawks will travel to SUNY Cortland Saturday at 1 p.m. for its second game of the weekend. To stay up to date with everything #NPHawks be sure to follow on Twitter at @nphawks, Instagram and Facebook at @newpaltzhawks, and subscribe to our Youtube channel,New Paltz Hawks.
