Box Score Montclair, NJ — The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team took on No. 10 Montclair State University Thursday night after a lightning-delayed start. The Hawks battled late to cut the early deficit, but could not complete the rally and suffered their first loss of the season, 2-1.
"We fought hard and were relentless for the full 70 minutes," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Shanna Szablinski. "Montclair is a great team and they capitalized on their opportunities early giving them the edge."
Victoria Rossi gave Monclair the early 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game and Kailey Dalgauer doubled up on the advantage about 14 minutes later for the Red Hawks (3-0).
The Hawks (2-1) had ample chances as time went on in the first half, earning five corners in the last 20 minutes, but Montclair State goalie Nicole Andriani (11 saves) stepped up to make six saves in that span to keep SUNY New Paltz off the board in the first half.
The Hawks out-shot the Red Hawks, 10-6 in the first half. They continued to garner chances in the last 35 minutes as well, registering nine shots to Montclair State's five and finally capitalized with four minutes left in the game to cut the score in half.
Off a penalty corner,
Samantha Ackerman played the ball atop the circle to
Jessica Ascencao who lifted a shot that went over the goalie, deflected off a defender and found the back corner of the cage for her fifth goal of the season.
Although the deficit was trimmed, the Hawks had limited chances with time expiring. Kayla Ahearn had one attempt in the last three minutes, which went wide, and ultimately the clock ticked down before SUNY New Paltz could complete the comeback.
"Despite our momentum in the second half and multiple scoring chances we fell short," Szablinski said. "It was a great game and I know we will continue to improve with time."
Jamie Owens got the start in goal for the Hawks and made three saves in 20 minutes, 42 seconds played.
Ryan Dowling came in for Owens to play the last 49 minutes and made one stop.
Ascencao led SUNY New Paltz with seven shots, five of which were on goal, followed by
Carly Croteau who registered six shots, including three on goal.
