Box Score Schenectady, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz tennis team played through cold weather conditions and battled to a 7-2 win Tuesday over Union College to conclude its regular season and stay undefeated on the year at 17-0.
"A 7-2 win, although the freezing, cold conditions, it was one of the toughest games we've had all season," said Hawks coach
Rob Bruley. "The score didn't reflect how tight the games were."
SUNY New Paltz cleaned up in doubles play, as freshmen
Trinity Chow and
Laura Koob earned an 8-4 win in first doubles with
Lindsay Haley and
Victoria Zezula also taking an 8-4 victory in second doubles.
Jenna Grandville, playing in place of
Emma Messenger at third doubles, teamed up with
Courtney Koran for an 8-5 victory over the Dutchman's Alex Greenberg and Samantha Siegel.
Chow then battled through a three-set win at first singles over Tal Pezzuco, winning, 6-1, 6-7, 1-0. Zezula earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Paige Webster at third singles, while Haley and Koran cruised to wins in fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Koran won, 6-1, 6-2 and Haley took home a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The only losses the Hawks suffered was in second and fourth singles.
SUNY New Paltz will wait until next week to see where it will land in the NCAA Tournament, which begins May 10.
"Everyone played their part in a great undefeated season," Bruley said. "Strong showing in doubles set us up nicely for a battle in singles. Looking forward to NCAA's."
