New Paltz, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz Athletic Communications Office took a look back at some of the best highlights caught on camera over the past few years from all the Hawks varsity programs.
One of the most important for the Hawks field hockey program came in the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship against top seeded and No. 14 nationally ranked SUNY Cortland.
After coming back from a two-goal deficit with less than 17 minutes remaining in regulation, SUNY New Paltz scored with three minutes left to tie the score at four and push the game into overtime. Following double overtime, the two teams were still knotted and were then forced into one-v-one's to determine the champion with the Hawks looking to defend their conference title from the previous season.
Each team made the first and missed their second and third attempts before Dani Ackerman had the opportunity to win it for SUNY New Paltz. Ackerman dribbled left and cut back right, getting the Red Dragons goalie to bite, before she gathered back the ball and fired a shot into the open cage for the goal. The score officially secured the victory for the Hawks, which won its second-straight SUNYAC title, and cemented what turned into a four-year dynasty for Ackerman and her senior class, which consisted of Jessica Caruana, Sarah Sansone, Alayna Wageman and Gretchen Kleinsmith.
Recently, Ackerman, Caruana, Sansone, Wageman, Kleinsmith and Hawks coach
Shanna Szablinski sat down on a Zoom call and looked back on the game and broke down Ackerman's one-v-one, while talking about the significance of that win. To watch the full interview, click below!
