SUNY New Paltz Women's Tennis Cleans Up SUNYAC Postseason Awards

5/13/2021 1:09:00 PM

In a tennis season unlike any other, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis program stepped up and earned its third connective, seventh overall, SUNYAC women's tennis title. That effort in this COVD-19 shortened season was led by two outstanding, three-peating, juniors and a sparkling freshman.

The SUNYAC Office announced its yearly women's tennis awards Friday and juniors Trinity Chow, Laura Koob and freshman Tatiana Barnett were all named to the first team and additionally took home all the most prestigious honors. Chow was named the Peter J. Cahill MVP for the third-straight season, Chow and Koob were honored as the Doubles Team of the Year for the third time and Barnett became the fourth-straight first-year Hawk to be announced as the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. Additionally, SUNY New Paltz coach Rob Bruley was honored as the SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the third-straight time.

Trinity Chow All-SUNYAC sqTrinity Chow – Peter J. Cahill MVP/Doubles Team of the Year/First-Team All-SUNYAC
(Glen Cove, NY)

It is fair to say that Trinity Chow owns this prestigious SUNYAC award. In the 13 seasons that the conference has awarded this honor, no previous player has won the award more than once. Chow has earned this honor for three consecutive seasons.

Trinity headlines a list of seven Hawks who have earned this distinction since its inception in 2007. Only Geneseo, with three selections, comes close.

"This award is a testament of a student athlete who not only excels in the classroom but comes to practice with an infectious work ethic and a drive to improve the level of her game with every practice and match day experience," Bruley said. "Truly well deserved to a player who is playing at the top of her game... and has been over the past three years one of the most exciting tennis players to watch perform in the history of our program."

Chow made it three straight seasons as a First-Team All-SUNYAC selection at the No. 1 singles position. Dealing with an injury throughout the season, Chow lost her first SUNYAC singles match after 20 consecutive victories, but bounced back to earn her third-straight SUNYAC singles championship after avenging her only loss to Oneonta's Oilvia Fraser by downing Fraser 6-2, 6-2 in the top singles spot at the conference championship.

Chow stepped up for her team and led the Hawks to a convincing 5-1 victory over the Red Dragons in the SUNYAC Tournament after clinching one of three singles victories needed and garnering a victory at the first doubles spot as well, and was later named to the All-SUNYAC Tournament team. She and partner Laura Koob never dropped a match this season and for the third-straight year was named Doubles Team of the Year.

"She is one of the strongest and most consistent pliers ever to represent our tennis program," said SUNY New Paltz coach Rob Bruley. "This spring was very challenging for Trinity as she was hit hard by injuries which limited her playing time at No. 1 singles. Every time Trinity steps on the court you can guarantee that she will be going all out to win."

Chow becomes the first Hawks to win the Peter J. Cahill MVP three times, let alone in her first three seasons, as well her and Koob becoming the first to be named Doubles Team of the Year three consecutive seasons.

"Over her three years at New Paltz she has had to reinvent her game and has become a better all-around player," Bruley added. "I look forward to Trinity being a major part of our continuing future success and looking forward to her coming back next season, fully fit, injury free and ready to go in the defense of her fourth SUNYAC championship."

Laura Koob All-SUNYAC sqLaura Koob – Doubles Team of the Year/First-Team All-SUNYAC
(Poughkeepsie, NY)

Equally impressive has been Poughkeepsie's Laura Koob. The Roy C. Ketcham graduate continued to dominate her SUNYAC opposition, primarily at the No. 2 singles slot, compiling at 5-0 season mark and upping her SUNYAC career record to 25-0.

She played at the top singles position twice this season and went undefeated there, defeating Cortland's Logan Streety, 6-0, 6-1 and coming from behind to beat Oneonta's Olivia Fraser in a three-set tie-breaker, 6-0, 5-6, 13-11.

The 2018-19 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year added a third straight SUNYAC second singles title to her resume, was named for the third straight year to the conference championship All-Tournament team and was the conference championship MVP, while earning a third consecutive First-Team All-SUNYAC honor. She and partner Trinity Chow were also recognized for the third-straight season as the Doubles Team of the Year, going undefeated in 2021, including a pivotal win at first doubles in the SUNYAC Championship game against the rival Red Dragons.

"We are very fortunate at New Paltz to have a player who wouldn't look out of place playing No. 1 singles in our line-up," Bruley said. "Laura stepped up this spring to play No. 1 singles when we had to rest Trinity. She is a very strong singles player during her three years at New Paltz, remaining undefeated in conference play at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Laura has a very strong work ethic, a player that every day looks to improve her game and perform at a very high level. Like Trinity, you know exactly what you are going to get on game day -- nothing but 100 percent commitment and a never give up attitude."

Tatiana Barnett All-SUNYAC sqTatiana Bartlett -- SUNYAC Rookie of the Year/First-Team All-SUNYAC
(Port Washington, NY)

The future for Hawks women's tennis looks bright with the emergence of freshman Tataina Barnett. There were no first-year jitters in her game as she compiled an impressive 5-0 season record at the number No. 4/5 singles spot, giving up only seven points in those five matches.

Her victory over Oneonta's Jayden Carillo at fifth singles in the SUNYAC finals helped to clinch the program's third consecutive SUNYAC championship and earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team. Barnett also paired with Trinity Chow, Laura Koob and Alex Chimenti to pick up three additional wins in doubles competition this season.

For her stellar freshman year, the Port Washington native earned SUNYAC Rookie of the Year honors. Barnett is the fourth consecutive Hawk to be conferred Rookie of the Year honors by SUNYAC, joining current teammates Koob, Onalee Batcheller and Jenna Grandville.

"Tatiana is carrying on the tradition we have set here at New Paltz by becoming the fourth first-year player in a row from New Paltz to be given this award," Bruley said "When playing lower down the ladder sometimes players can be overlooked by players higher up on the starting ladder, but I can't stress highly enough the part Tatiana has played on this championship winning team, anchoring the singles line up match after match. From stepping up to partnering with Laura at No. 1 doubles when Trinity was rested, and moving up the singles ladder, she remained undefeated in singles and in doubles. Moving forward, our program is in great hands with Tatiana, where I see her pushing players above her for a higher starting spot on the starting ladder."

Trinity Chow & Laura Koob -- SUNYAC Doubles Team of the Year
And if Chow and Koob weren't dominant enough in singles play, their combination as the Hawks' No. 1 doubles team has been equally as impressive. This season they combined for a 4-0 record and over three seasons the Chow-Koob combination has a 20-0 doubles record.

Together they captured the 2021 SUNYAC No. 1 doubles titles for the third straight season after defeating Oneonta's Sophoa Shutte and Mya Lipscom and earning a third straight appearance on the conference championship All-Tournament team. For that dominance, Chow and Koob were named the SUNYAC Doubles Team of the Year for the third consecutive time.

"Trinity and Laura have formed one of the most formidable doubles teams our conference has ever seen," Bruley said. "Their No. 1 doubles partnership remains undefeated in conference play over the past three seasons and is a major platform for our three consecutive conference championship titles. They have formed a great understanding of doubles play between them and I only see the bond in this partnership growing stronger over next year."

Rob Bruley Coach of the Year graphic sqRob Bruley – Coach of the Year
Bruley secured his seventh SUNYAC Championship this past spring and third consecutive in dominating fashion. His team went 5-0 in the regular season, dropping just three matches TOTAL in that span and rolled through postseason play. The Hawks opened up the 2021 SUNYAC Tournament with a quick 5-0 victory in the semifinal round against Fredonia State and then defeated SUNY Oneonta for the third consecutive season, a 5-1 victory, to claim another SUNYAC crown.

During his 23-plus year tenure, Bruley has recorded 227 victories in the history books and just 115 losses. Including Chow this season, Bruley has boasted nine Player of the Year honors, four Rookie of the Year recognitions and 45 players who have earned a spot on the All-SUNYAC team.

In the past half decade, Bruley has recruited a dominant team that has owned the conference and has taken steps in competing at the national level. Bruley and his team enter the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time since his tenure, hoping to earn a second-round appearance for the third time in program history and second-straight after beating Husson University in the first round in 2019.

SUNY New Paltz is set to face Babson University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the Rom Sports Commission in Rome, Georgia.
