Geneva, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis program return to the ITA Northeast Regionals for the first time since 2006 came to a swift end Saturday.
SUNY New Paltz sent four representatives to Geneva this weekend to compete against some of the best Division III players in the northeast. While senior Trinity Chow's first round singles victory represents the sole victory among the Hawks, there were good takeaways to be had from the tournament.
No. 9-16 ranked Chow defeated her first round singles match opponent, RPI's Krisia Flores 6-1, 6-1, before falling to Josie Libby of University of Rochester in the second round. The 6-2, 6-0 score doesn't tell the full story of the match, as Chow fought for every point throughout.
"Trin could not have played any better," said Hawks' head coach Rob Bruley.
It was a similar battle for freshman Anya Barteck, who faced the University of Rochester Yellowjackets' No. 9-16 ranked Camilia Ruiz-Vega. Both sets were very close, with Barteck forcing a seventh game in both sets, but couldn't convert for a tiebreaker forcing sixth point, losing 7-5, 7-5. Junior Onalee Batcheller had a tough draw against Union College's Marilena Kardimou and took a 6-0, 6-1 loss.
In doubles play, Batcheller and senior Alexandra Dratch lost their matchup against Skidmore College's No. 4 ranked Lily Feldman and Chantel Thongphok, 8-1. Chow and Bartek put up a good battle in their matchup against RPI sisters Krisia and Lorna Flores Gonzalez, but would fall to them 8-5.
All four will play in singles and doubles consolidation matches on Sunday to close out New Paltz's stay in Geneva before heading back home.
As with the Vassar Scramble, there is no team scoring for the tournament; SUNY New Paltz's season record remains at 2-1. The regionals continue through Monday, with the Round of 16 and the quarterfinals on Sunday, and the final four matches for the singles and doubles tournaments on Monday.
SUNY New Paltz returns to full team action Wednesday when it travels to Troy, NY for its last team scoring opponent of the fall season against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The match is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
