Thiells, NY — the State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball program stopped by the alma mater of longtime assistant coach
Tony Bonilla on Monday, North Rockland High School, and worked with current student-athletes on the boy's volleyball team.
A two-time national championship program, Hawks men's volleyball team prides itself in promoting the sport nationally, but more importantly in the Hudson Valley. Each year, the team selects a local school that is interested in starting and promoting volleyball and on Monday, the Hawks went to North Rockland High School.
"It was great to return to my alma matter and being able to give back to the school that gave me so much," said Bonilla, who also starred for the Hawks from 1987-2000 and was enshrined into the SUNY New Paltz Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002.
The Hawks instructed and played alongside the Red Raiders varsity team, aiding in drills and giving tips throughout the day.
"The boys had a great time, and I learned some things I can add into our workouts," said North Rockland boy's volleyball coach Margaret Stead. "Some of the boys were even a little sore the next day."
SUNY New Paltz gears up for its 2023 season, which is set to begin Jan. 18 against Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
