Cortland, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team kicked off the season with some exhibition action Thursday, playing in a scramble tournament against SUNY Cortland and SUNY Oneonta.
The three teams didn't play traditional points and the tournament will count as an exhibition match, but regardless, coach
Rob Bruley was happy with how his team performed.
"We played very, very well considering it was our first match of the year," he said. "Justine [Stanejko] won both her matches as did Anya [Barteck], Onalee [Batcheller] and Loretta [Donovan]. One and two doubles looked strong and to new doubles teams that we got jelling together."
Batcheller and Barteck played together and faced each team's top doubles partners and won both matches, along with SUNY New Paltz's second doubles duo of Stanejko and Donovan who earned wins against both Red Dragons opponents.
Isabel van der Veen and
Amirah Alston were partnered at third doubles, while freshmen
Lillian Nowak and
Nina Genzone earned some SUNYAC experienced as the final pair of the day.
The Hawks are back in action Sept. 10 and 11, competing against some top competition in the region in the annual Vassar Scramble.
