New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz swept weekly United Volleyball Conference awards Monday with senior
Brendan Spulnick being named as the Co-UVC Player of the Week, while freshman
Krish Jain earned his first UVC Rookie of the Week honors.
The Hawks (5-1 overall, 0-0 UVC) started the season hot in their Midwest trip, clinching wins over two top-15 programs in No. 12 Dominican and No. 6 North Central College. Spulnick was the catalyst on the week, putting up gaudy numbers to start his final season with the team. He led SUNY New Paltz in virtually every offensive category totaling 76 kills, 3.32 kills per set, 16 aces, six assists, 10 blocks and 29 digs for a team-leading 96.5 points in six matches played this past week.

The Clifton Park, NY native posted double-digit kills in all but one match, including a season-high of 17 against Benedictine, and totaled a season-high of seven aces in a win over Dominican. He hit above .400 in four matches, including a .692 clip in a sweep of Augustana. The weekly honor is the first for Spulnick, who received his second All-UVC selection last season.
Jain becomes the first Rookie of the Week selection for the Hawks since
Carter Lotz and
Evan Kane last season. The Hicksville, NY native started in all six matches and competed in all 22 sets to begin his collegiate career at middle blocker. The 6-foot, 6-inch Jain totaled 30 kills, third on the team, with three aces and an assist, while hitting a productive .436 on the week. He led SUNY New Paltz defensively with 15 blocks and 13 digs and totaled a career-high five blocks against Benedictine. In three sets played against Augustana, Jain had his best performance on the week, totaling eight kills on 10 attempts to hit .800 and added an assist, an ace and three blocks to aid in his team's 3-0 sweep.
SUNY New Paltz returned to New York on Monday and have a 10-day break before its next match, which comes against No. 2 Springfield Feb. 1.
