BUFFALO, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz swim teams were on the road today for day two of the 2024 State University Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet is being held at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center at Erie Community College. The second day of the championship meet kicked off with prelims in the morning and finals in the evening. The Hawks are in third place through the first day in the men's and fifth place in the women's competition.
PRELIM RESULTS
Antonio Vavalle finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:50.11 and advanced to the finals. Alex Gorzula finished sixth in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:56.88 and qualified for finals. Jack Wirth, Luke Hoyt, and Mason Kennedy would also advance to finals taking the last three qualifying spots for the 200-yard IM. Jack Samko finished ninth in the 50-yard freestyle to advance to finals. Samko was followed into the 50-yard freestyle final by teammates Steven Macaluso and Venn Engstrom.
Abigail Dusseault took eighth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:31.00 and advanced to the finals. Amanda O'Brien would also make finals in the 500-yard freestyle with a tenth-place finish and a time of 5:38.59. A trio of Hawks would qualify for the 200-yard IM finals with Erin Donovan leading the way in prelims with an eleventh-place finish. Donovan was joined in by teammates Candela Sandoval and Chloe Jeffares who made it through the first round of the 200-yard IM. Sierra DePry advanced to finals in the 50-yard freestyle with an eighth-place finish and a time of 24.99.
FINAL RESULTS
Abigail Dusseault finished seventh in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:26.74. Amanda O'Brien finished in fifteenth place in the B-Final of the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:40.56. Erin Donovan, Candella Sandoval, and Chloe Jeffares finished tenth, eleventh, and sixteenth respectively in the B-Final of the 200 IM. Sierra DePry finished in eighth place for the A-Final on the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.16. The women finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Sierra DePry, Abigail Keiser Molly Snyder, and Shannon Corr) with a time of 1:44.09.
Antonio Vavalle finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle A-Final with a time of 4:46.13. Alex Gorzula finished eighth in the 200-yard IM A-Final with a time of 1:57.25. Jack Wirth, Luke Hoyt, and Mason Kennedy finished eleventh, fifteenth, and sixteenth respectively in the B-Final of the 200-yard IM. Jack Samko, Steven Macaluso and Venn Engstrom finished ninth, twelfth, and thirteenth respectively in the 50-yard freestyle B-Final. The men finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Jack Samko, Paul Castner, Steven Macaluso, and Venn Engstrom) in a time of 1:25.91.
"Day two was great to see some of our individual swims. Both teams saw some fast swims in all three events today! Our relays also put up some exciting times too. I am excited with today's results as we head into Day three for more fast swims across the board," said Head Coach Nolan Graziano.
The Hawks will return to action tomorrow, February 23, for day three of the SUNYAC Championships at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY.
