BUFFALO, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz swim teams were on the road today for day three of the 2024 State University Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet is being held at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center at Erie Community College. The third day of the championship meet featured prelims in the morning and finals in the evening. The Hawks are in third place through the first day in the men's and fifth in the women's competition.
PRELIM RESULTS
Alex Gorzula finished third in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:18.60 and qualified for finals. Xavier Calderon and Samuel Debbie would also advance to finals in the 400-yard IM. Steven Macaluso and Jack Samko finished third and sixth respectively in the 100-yard fly prelim and advanced to the A-Cut finals race. Nicolas Brown finished sixteenth to claim the last spot in the B-Cut final of the 100-yard fly. Antonio Vavalle finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.05 and advanced to the finals. Korey Barber finished ninth in the 200-yard freestyle, missing the A-Cut final by .59 seconds but securing the top mark heading into the B-Cut final race. Venn Engstrom and Luke Hoyt claimed fourth and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 58.40 and 58.83 respectively and moved on to finals. Mason Kennedy and Xavier Calderon would also advance to finals with twelfth and thirteenth place finishes respectively. Jack Wirth claimed third place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.06. Korey Barber and Paul Castner would also advance to finals with eleventh and thirteenth place finishes in the preliminary round.
Candela Sandoval, Amanda O'Brien, Sage Vadney qualified for finals in the 400-yard IM with tenth, thirteenth, and fourteenth place finishes respectively. Sierra DePry finished eighth in the 100-yard fly with a time of 59.93 and advanced to finals. DePry was joined by Chloe Jeffares and Abigail Keiser who would also advance to finals in the 100-yard fly. Abigail Dusseault took ninth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.68 and advanced to the B-Cut finals. Erin Donovan and Shannon Corr finished thirteenth and fourteenth respectively in the 100-yard breaststroke and advanced to finals. Molly Snyder edged into the 100-yard backstroke finals in sixteenth place finishing ahead of seventeenth place by .21 seconds.
FINAL RESULTS
Candela Sandoval finished tenth in the 400-yard IM with a time of 5:04.80. Amanda O'Brien and Sage Vadney finished in fourteenth and fifteenth places and times of 5:17.63 and 5:18.91 respectively. Sierra DePry finished seventh, moving up one place from prelims, in the 100-yard fly with a time of 59.92. Chloe Jeffares and Abigail Keiser finished thirteenth and fifteenth places respectively in the 100-yard fly final. Abigail Dusseault took ninth in the 200-yard freestyle finals with a time of 2:04.22. Erin Donovan and Shannon Corr finished in twelfth and fifteenth in the 100-yard breaststroke with time of 1:13.27 and 1:14.24 respectively. The women finished fifth in the 400-yard medley relay (Sage Vadney, Erin Donovan, Sierra DePry, and Shannon Corr) with a time of 4:14.24.

Steven Macaluso and Jack Samko finished third and seventh in the 100-yard A-Cut final with time of 50.87 and 52.23 respectively. Nicolas Brown finished fifteenth in the B-Cut final of the 100-yard fly with a time of 54.72. Antonio Vavalle finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.61. Korey Barber claimed tenth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.88. Venn Engstrom and Luke Hoyt finished fourth and seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 58.19 and 59.46 respectively. Mason Kennedy and Xavier Calderon finished in twelfth and thirteenth places respectively with time of 1:00.41 and 1:00.49. Jack Wirth took fourth place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.09. Korey Barber and Paul Castner finished in tenth and fifteenth places respectively in the B-Cut final. The men finished second in the 400-yard medley relay (Jack Wirth, Venn Engstrom, Steven Macaluso, and Antonio Vavalle) in a time of 3:29.30.
"Day 3, we unleashed our full force. Everyone on the team had an opportunity to compete today. It was great watching everyone swim their best and put up some really impressive times! It was a great day. I can't wait to see how the team finishes the meet tomorrow," said Head Coach Nolan Graziano
The Hawks will return to action tomorrow, February 24, for the final day of the SUNYAC Championships at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY.
