BUFFALO, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz swim teams were on the road today for the fourth and final day of the 2024 State University Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet is being held at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center at Erie Community College. The fourth day of the championship meet featured prelims in the morning and finals in the evening with the final event being the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Hawks finished in third place on the men's side and fifth in the women's competition. SUNY Geneseo won both SUNYAC team titles for the final time as they will be leaving for the Empire 8 next school year.
PRELIM RESULTS
Jack Wirth and Paul Castner finished in seventh and tenth place respectively to advance to the final in the 200-yard backstroke. Venn Engstrom finished sixteenth to claim the final spot in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.46. Engstrom would withdraw from the final and be unable to race again for the day. A trio of Hawks qualified for the A-Cut final of the 200-yard breaststroke with Alex Gorzula leading the way in third place with a time of 2:10.87. Gorzula was joined in the A-Cut final by teammates Luke Hoyt in fourth place and Xavier Calderon in eighth place. Mason Kennedy finished just behind Calderon in ninth place to qualify for the B-Cut final of the 200-yard breaststroke. Korey Barber and Jack Samko finished sixth and eighth respectively in the 200-yard butterfly prelim and advanced to the A-Cut finals with times of 1:58.55 and 1:58.80. A second pair of Hawks qualified for the B-Cut final in the 200-yard butterfly with Nick Brown in eleventh and Samuel Debbie in fourteenth place(s).
Sage Vadney claimed thirteenth place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:22.53 and qualified for the B-Cut final. Sierra DePry finished tenth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.91 and advanced to the B-Cut final. Shannon Corr and Erin Donovan finished in ninth and eleventh in the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:41.67 and 2:45.71 respectively. Candela Sandoval took the final spot in the A-Cut final of the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:24.43. Taylor Pazderski and Angelina Somma qualified for the B-Cut final of the 200-yard butterfly with times of 2:27.71 and 2:32.96 respectively.
FINAL RESULTS
Abigail Dusseault finished sixth in the 1650-yard freestyle finals with a time of 18:55.24. Amanda O'Brien finished just behind Dusseault in ninth place with a time of 19:07.17 for the 1650-yard freestyle. Sage Vadney moved up two places for tenth place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:17.56. Sierra DePry took tenth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.62 with the top mark in the B-Cut final. Erin Donovan and Shannon Corr swaped places in finals finishing in ninth and eleventh in the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:40.38 and 2:43.05 respectively. Candela Sandoval finished eighth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:22.36. Taylor Pazderski and Angelina Somma finished in tenth and thirteenth place(s) in the B-Cut final of the 200-yard butterfly with times of 2:26.74 and 2:33.97 respectively. The women finished sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (Erin Donovan, Abigail Keiser, Molly Snyder, and Shannon Corr) with a time of 3:52.91.
Antonio Vavalle finished fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:40.16. Brian LaRossa finished fifteenth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:49.96. Jack Wirth finished in seventh in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:58.95 in the A-Cut final. Paul Castner finished in eleventh place in the B-Cut final of the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.71. Alex Gorzula took third place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.10. Luke Hoyt claimed fourth place and Xavier Calderon finished in eighth place in the A-Cut final of the 200-yard breaststroke with time of 2:09.81 and 2:19.27 respectively. Mason Kennedy finished in tenth place of the B-Cut final of the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:11.82. Korey Barber and Jack Samko finished seventh and eighth respectively in the 200-yard butterfly A-Cut finals with times of 1:58.83 and 1:59.32. Nick Brown and Samuel Debbie finished in tenth and fifteenth respectively in the B-Cut final of the 200-yard butterfly. The men finished fourth in the 400-yard freestlyle relay (Venn Engstrom, Jack Samko, Antonio Vavalle, and Steven Macaluso) in a time of 3:10.77.
The conclusion of today's championship meet marks the end of the 2023-2024 season for the Swim program.
