Middletown, CT — For the second straight year, and for the sixth time in program history, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team are NCAA Tournament bound.
The annual NCAA Division III women's tennis selection show was held Monday, revealing where and who the SUNYAC Champions will see in the first round of the big dance with the Hawks facing Mary Washington of the Coast-to-Coast Conference in round one, playing on the campus of Wesleyan University.
Mary Washington earned an at-large bid after coming in second in the C2C Tournament Championship, falling to eventual champions Christopher Newport, 5-2. The Eagles enter the tournament 9-10 overall with the only common opponent played with SUNY New Paltz this season, Vassar. They defeated the Brewers in a close match, 5-4 on the campus of Swarthmore. The Hawks faced Vassar in a rain postponement April 19, and in a Vassar Scramble Sept. 9-10.
The winner of the matchup will face the winner of Redlands and Alfred the following day with the pod then staying in Middletown, CT to take on whichever team comes out of the Wesleyan/Stevens/Eastern Nazerene bracket Sunday.
SUNY New Paltz enters the national tournament at 11-8 overall, winning its last four which included sweeps of Oneonta and Geneseo in the SUNYAC semifinal and championship round, respectively, to earn back-to-back conference titles. The Hawks earned a first round win last season, before falling to hosting Amherst in the second round. The team has never gotten past the second round of the NCAA Tournament, making the second day of the three times including last season after defeating St. Mary's College of Maryland.
