Poughkeepsie, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz competed in the Vassar Tournament Sunday morning where it faced athletes from Vassar, New York University and Hamilton college.
Doubles Matches: Justine Stanjeko and
Isabel van der Veen fell 6-4 in their first match of the day against Smith College but battled back in their second match against Vassar. The two faced a highly competitive team and won 8-4.
Sydney Sladicka and
Angelica Gabriel dropped both of their doubles matches Sunday, first against the Pioneers, 6-2 and then against the hosting Brewers, 8-2.
Nina Genzone and
Olivia Kunz won their first doubles match in a competitive tie breaker against Smith, ending the match 7-6 and 8-6. They fell in their second match of the day 8-2 to Vassar.
Olivia Eifert and Alyssa Trookie fell to the Pioneers, 6-3.
Singles Matches: Stanjeko lost 6-3 to Smith in her singles match Sunday. Sladicka and Kunz also dropped to Smith College, both 6-2. Gabriel dropped a 6-1 match to the Pioneers, while Trookie also lost to Smith 6-3. Eifert fell 6-4 and
Laina Martinez fell 6-1.
Nina Genzone won both her doubles matches against Smith College early and played a very competitive singles match, winning 6-4.
"A great way to round off our tennis weekend with some high level doubles and singles competition. Our program competed at a very high level winning doubles and singles matches against Smith and Vassar," said Hawks coach
Rob Bruley. "The team really hit the ball well today, and I was very happy with the way we competed in every match. This high level of competition will set us up for the remainder of the fall season. We look to take this confident play to Oneonta."
SUNY New Paltz will return to the road Wednesday at 3 p.m. when it continues SUNYAC play against the hosting Red Dragons of Oneonta.
