Box Score Scranton, PA — An early lead could not propel The State University of New York at New Paltz past the Scranton Royals, as the Hawks fell to the Royals 4-3 in the teams' first meeting in program history.
SUNY New Paltz (1-1) netted two straight goals early on in the match, but were met by a determined Scranton (2-0) team who answered with two of their own, evening the score before end of the first. Both teams scored in the second, but the Royals came up with a goal with under two minutes left in the third, solidifying them the lead and the win.
The Hawks got started early in the second minute, when
Rachel Tama saw an opportunity and tried a shot, but the attempt was blocked. However, just over a minute later, Tama sent a ball towards fellow senior
Miranda Britton, who finished the hit into the back of the net for the Hawks' first of the match.
But the duo wasn't done yet.
In the fifth minute, Tama found Britton again in the shooting circle, where Britton scored her second of the game. Scranton responded with an unassisted goal, and after a mass substitution, the Royals struck again to tie the score 2-2 until the conclusion of the first — all of the action happening in under ten minutes of play.
Five minutes into the second, Scranton scored another goal to take the lead, 3-2. But eight minutes later, Tama took a shot for herself and netted it unassisted, tying the score back up. The half finished soon after, the score tied 3-3.
It was not until the last two minutes of the third when Scranton struck again. The Royals deflected a loose ball past the Hawks' back line to secure their fourth of the game. Neither team could garner a successful opportunity for the remainder of the time, and the buzzer sounded with Scranton victorious 4-3.
The Royals created more chances on net compared to the Hawks, having taken 12 shots with six on goal, compared to the Hawks' eight shots with five on goal. Scranton also had more corner opportunities and created six chances compared to SUNY New Paltz's four. Britton led for the Hawks with two goals followed by Tama who added a goal and two assists.
SUNY New Paltz continues non-conference play on Sept. 6, hosting Endicott College for its home opener. The match is set to start at noon.
