Schenectady, NY – The State University of New York New Paltz women's tennis team competed in the first day of the Union College tournament Saturday. The final's matches will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Singles Matches — Justine Stanejko fell in her first singles match in Flight A against Union. She lost the first set 6-3 and the second 6-4. She fell 8-5 in her second set of the day against Ithaca College.
Sam Ostrander won her first match against St. Lawrence University in a 6-2 first set and a 6-3 second set. She went on to beat the eighth seed in the A Flight from union in the semifinals. She won the first round 6-1, fell 2-6 in the second and then battled back to win the tie breaker 10-3. Ostrander will play in the championship round of the Flight A finals Sunday morning.
Patrycja Filonik played in the B Flight winning her first set against Ithaca 7-6 in an 8-6 tiebreaker. She lost her second set 6-4 and the final 10-6 losing the match. She fell 8-3 in her second match of the day against Union.
Sydney Sladicka also lost her match of the day against St. Lawrence after a 6-1 first set and a 6-0 second. She won her second match against Ithaca 8-6. Sladicka will play tomorrow in the west final at 10:30a.m.
Alex Krol and
Lula Brown-Vann played represented the Hawks in Flight C of the tournament. Krol won her first match against Union after two 6-3 sets. She won her second match against St. Lawrence with a 6-3 first set and a 6-2 second. Brown-Vann won her first match against St. Lawrence with a 6-4 first set and a 6-0 second. She won her second match against Union losing the first set 6-3. She battled back and won the second set 7-5 and the tiebreaker 10-4. Krol and Brown-Vann will play one another in the final for Flight C at 9:00a.m. on Sunday.
Nina Genzone won her first match of the day in Flight D against St. Lawrence 8-3. She fell in her second match against Union in a 6-1 first set and a 6-2 second set.
Angelica Gabriel received a first round BYE and won her first match of the day against St. Lawrence. Gabriel won the first set 6-4 and the second 6-2, taking the match. She will play in the final for Flight D at 9:00a.m. on Sunday.
Alyssa Trokie won her first match of the tournament in an 8-2 win over Ithaca. Trokie fell in her second match 6-4 and then 6-2.
Olivia Kunz was also in Flight D. Kunz won her first match 8-3 and fell in her second. She lost the first set in a close 6-4 and lost the second in 7-6 set with a 7-1 tiebreaker.
Doubles Matches – Kunz and Filonik won their first doubles match of the second 8-6 against a pair from Union. Stanejko and Ostrander also won their first doubles match of the season 8-6. Both sets of women will compete in the semifinals of Flight A Sunday at 1:00p.m.
Genzone and Gabriel lost their match 8-6 against St. Lawrence. Krol and Brown-Vann also fell in their match, losing in an 8-2 set to Ithaca. Both pairs will play in the consolation Bracket Sunday at 1:00p.m.
Day two of the action up at Union college will being at 8 a.m.
