SCHENECTADY, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team was on the road this weekend for the first regular season matches of the 2026-2027 season. The Hawks traveled upstate to Union College for their annual early season tournament. They played Saturday and Sunday in tournament play format. The Hawks faced a quartet of teams from the Liberty League including the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Saint Lawrence University, Union College, and Ithaca College.
"This weekend we competed in the very competitive Union tournament which included a very strong lineup from the Liberty League. Our tournament play on Saturday saw both Angelica Gabriel and Sam Ostrander advance to the finals in singles along with Olivia Kunz and Angelica in doubles. Sunday's play saw Sam lose a tough final match in a third set tiebreaker and Angelica onto her win 2 sets to 0. In the double's final, Angelica and Olivia lost a difficult game 6-8. Overall, the team performed exceptionally well, and we are looking forward to competing in the Vassar tournament next weekend." said Coach Rob Bruley.
The Hawks will return next weekend for another tournament closer to home across the Hudson at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Next week's action will be spread over three days with first serve at 2:00 PM on Friday.
