Despite Quality Chances to Score, Hawks Fall, 2-0, to No. 20 Brockport

Box Score

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – In its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) road game of 2010 on Friday afternoon at Huntley Parker Field, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (5-5-0, 2-2-0 SUNYAC) lost, 2-0, to The College at Brockport (7-0-2, 3-0-0 SUNYAC), who is ranked at No. 20 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top-25 Poll.

With the victory, Brockport's goalkeeper Joe Marino recorded his eighth straight shutout, a program record.

The Hawks had their chances throughout the contest, though, and did not surrender to a red-hot Brockport team. After a first half that saw the Golden Eagles score two goals—Mike Breman scored in the 22nd minute, while Nick Stenzel found the back of the net in the 39th minute— the blue and orange regrouped and unleashed a handful of quality scoring chances in the second stanza.

In the 65th minute, junior forward Joe Emberger (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) controlled a blasted free kick in the box before uncorking a shot on goal. Marino made a diving stop to thwart the scoring opportunity and prevented the Hawks from spoiling Brockport's shutout streak.

Junior forward Jimmy Altadonna (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) boasted a team-high three shots, all of which were on target. Emberger and senior forward Dave Gardiner (Malta, N.Y.) each recorded two shots as well.

On the contest, the Golden Eagles held a 13-11 advantage in shots, while each side took one corner kick.

Junior goalkeeper Thomas Viscardi (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) made two saves in net for New Paltz, while Marino piled up six stops in between the pipes for Brockport.

New Paltz looks to regain footing tomorrow when they travel to Geneseo, N.Y., to face SUNY Geneseo in a conference match. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
