Women's Soccer Outpaces Brockport, 1-0

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.
– The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (4-6-1, 2-2-0 SUNYAC) defeated the Brockport Golden Eagles (5-5-0, 1-3-0 SUNYAC) in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup, 1-0, Friday afternoon on the Turf Field.

This marks the first time in five years that the Hawks have beaten Brockport and the first time in three years that the Hawks have started out 2-2 in the league.

The blue and orange struck in the fifth minute on a goal by sophomore forward Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y.). Kondelka headed in the score off a ball crossed in from the left wing. Sophomore defender Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y) were credited with an assist on the play.

The Hawks had another scoring chance in the 14th minute when Abravanel broke past the Golden Eagles' back line. Abravanel ripped a shot wide left from the close left wing.

At the end of the first half, the Hawks outshot Brockport, 9-3, and were even in corners, 2-2.

The weather conditions worsened as the second half went underway, and the slick field conditions became a factor for both teams on the Turf Field.

The Brockport goalkeeper made a tremendous save off a shot from senior defender Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.) in the 51st minute, preventing New Paltz from breaking the game open.

The Golden Eagles had a wide open net in the 71st minute when sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y.) was out of the goal due to injury. Brockport's Jess Bush unleashed a shot wide left. The near-miss proved to be fatal to the Golden Eagles' cause as New Paltz held on to prevail, 1-0.

Vega earned her fifth shutout on the season while collecting one save on the afternoon.

In between the pipes for Brockport, Erin Asquith allowed one goal while compiling nine saves in 90 minutes of play.

New Paltz returns to action tomorrow when it hosts SUNY Geneseo at either the Turf Field or Alumni Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
