NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (6-7-2, 4-3-0 SUNYAC) tied Drew University (7-5-1, 2-1-0 Landmark), 1-1, in a non-conference contest held Wednesday afternoon on Alumni Field. This marks the last home game of the season for the blue and orange.
The first shot for the Hawks came from junior defender
Shannon Cobb (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) in the eighth minute. Cobb ripped an attempt from the top of the box, but was denied by the Drew keeper.
The Hawks carried momentum as they established two scoring opportunities in the 16th minute. Junior midfielder
Alexa Balestrieri's (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) shot missed just left of the goal from the far left wing. Seconds later, sophomore midfielder
Sarah DeMarzo (Mahopac, N.Y.) unleashed a shot, which was stopped by the Ranger keeper, extinguishing the scoring chance.
In the 28th minute, the Rangers had back-to-back corners but could not capitalize as the Hawk defense diminished the opportunities.
With 10 minutes remaining in the half, junior midfielder
Sherri Lajoie (River Edge, N.J.) fired a shot from the close right wing, which was saved by the diving Ranger netminder, keeping the game knotted, 0-0.
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y.) made a brilliant save for the Hawks in the 49th minute. Drew's Christine Meconi uncorked a shot headed for the left upper 90 when Vega dived to make the save.
Ten minutes later, Lajoie used nifty footwork to drive the Hawks into the Drew zone and found teammate
Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.), whose shot was saved by the Drew netminder.
New Paltz would tickle the twine in the 60th minute when Bennett found the right upper 90 off a direct kick, giving the Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
However, Drew responded right back in the 65th minute when Meconi hit the equalizer from the far right wing.
Both teams' back lines held up for the remaining 25 minutes, resulting in overtime.
At the end of the second half, the blue and orange held a 13-5 margin in shots, and corners were even at three apiece.
In the first overtime period, the strong defenses held up, as only two shots were fired for the Hawks and one shot for Drew.
In the 101st minute, Lajoie had spacing and was on a fast break, but ultimately was contested by a Ranger defender to diminish a potential game-winner.
The teams would draw after they battled for 110 minutes.
In between the pipes for the Rangers, Kim Jaikisson allowed one goal while saving eight shots. Vega allowed one goal and made seven stops for the blue and orange.
The Hawks return to action Friday, Oct. 22 when they travel to SUNY Oswego for a conference matchup. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.
