New Paltz Qualifies for SUNYAC Tournament, Draws with Oswego, 1-1

Box Score

OSWEGO, N.Y. – For just the sixth time in the history of the program and the fifth time in the tenure of head coach Colleen Bruley's career, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team qualified for the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship Tournament. The Hawks (6-7-3, 4-3-1 SUNYAC) did so by drawing with SUNY Oswego (6-9-1, 1-6-1 SUNYAC), 1-1, in SUNYAC action Friday afternoon in Oswego, N.Y.

With the draw, the Hawks can finish no worse than sixth in the final SUNYAC standings.

Junior midfielder Sherri Lajoie (River Edge, N.J.) put the Hawks on the board in the 50th minute, using a pass from senior defender Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.) to give New Paltz the lead.

Oswego's Toby Klein, however, would respond with a goal in the 73rd minute, beating sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y.) with a shot to the top right-hand corner of the net. Kelly Adams gained an assist on the play.

Neither team could produce the go-ahead goal down the stretch, which ultimately forced overtime. Oswego and New Paltz each took a shot in the first overtime period, but the Hawks had two chances to score in the second overtime session. Sophomore forward Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y.) put a shot on target in the 104th minute, while sophomore forward Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) missed wide just four minutes later.

Vega and Oswego goalkeeper Christina Fregosi each made four saves in the draw.

Oswego outshot New Paltz, 12-10, on the match and took five corner kicks to the Hawks' two. The Lakers also were whistled offside eight times.

New Paltz looks to capture a No. 4 seed in the SUNYAC Championship Tournament against SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Cortland, N.Y. With the No. 4 seed, the Hawks would earn the right to host the No. 5 seed in the SUNYAC Championship Tournament's play-in game on Saturday, Oct. 30.
