BUFFALO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team's (7-8-4) season ended in heartbreaking fashion Saturday afternoon at Coyer Field in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship Tournament, as Buffalo State (11-5-3) advanced on penalty kicks, 3-2, after the score remained tied at 1-1 after regulation.
With the score deadlocked at one after 110 minutes of play, the game went into a penalty-kick shootout to determine who would advance.
Buffalo State scored on its first three attempts in the shootout, as Jordan Dudish, Amanda Smyth and Megan Murphy made good on their chances. Virginia Porten made a diving save on a shot taken by the Hawks' fifth shooter, giving the Bengals their first-ever appearance in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals.
While the Bengals held a commanding edge in shots, 28-8, the Hawks hung tough, as sophomore goalkeeper
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y.) had a commendable outing in goal. Vega made eight stops on the afternoon.
Sophomore forward
Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) quieted the crowd in the fifth minute, beating a Buffalo State defender one-on-one before tucking the ball inside the right post. No assist was awarded on the play.
It took 58:52 for the Bengals to finally reach the board, as Amanda Sauer's score off of a Melissa Mahoney feed knotted the tally at one apiece.
Buffalo State continued to pour on the offensive pressure in overtime, taking four shots in each of the two overtime periods.
Porten turned aside one shot in between the pipes for the Bengals.
With the win, Buffalo State will play second-seeded SUNY Plattsburgh in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 5, on the campus of SUNY Oneonta at 6:30 p.m.
