New Paltz Women’s Soccer Tripped up by Plattsburgh on Senior Day

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team's (6-7-1, 4-3-0 SUNYAC) five-game win streak ended Saturday afternoon on Alumni Field during Senior Day, as the Hawks fell, 1-0, to SUNY Plattsburgh (9-2-1, 4-1-1 SUNYAC) in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest.

Prior to the start of the game, the team honored its five seniors: defenders Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Vanessa Rogers (Otisville, N.Y.) and midfielders Emily Buckner (Pine Bush, N.Y.), Tanja Todoric (Spring Valley, N.Y.) and Rebecca Devlin (Staten Island, N.Y.).

Plattsburgh controlled the tempo of the game for much of the first half, as the Cardinals outshot the Hawks by a 10-2 margin in the first 45 minutes of play.

The Cardinals' best chance to score in the period came in the eighth minute when Lindsey Keyser sprung sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y.) into action. Keyser blasted a shot from the close right wing, and Vega turned it aside. Kristie Pageau then came in and tried to put back the rebound, but Vega stopped that shot as well, keeping the score knotted at zero early.

Things heated up in the second half, however, as both teams had a number of offensive chances. Plattsburgh shifted the momentum in its favor with a goal at 65:33. Emily Riley played in a through ball from the right wing, and Pageau received it from inside six yards, slipping the ball past Vega to put the Cardinals up.

Despite New Paltz's chances to tie the game, the Plattsburgh defense clamped down. At the 81:12 mark, the Hawks received a golden opportunity to bury the equalizer, as a Cardinal defender was charged with a foul on the left flank. Sophomore midfielder Sarah DeMarzo (Mahopac, N.Y.) set up the free kick opportunity, but missed wide left of the frame.

Both DeMarzo and sophomore midfielder Emily Rokitowski (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) took shots in the final minute of regulation, but both attempts went left of the goal.

On the afternoon, Plattsburgh outshot New Paltz, 15-10, and held the edge in corner kicks, 4-2.

Vega made four stops in goal for the Hawks, while Alina Greiser notched the shutout in net for the Cardinals with a one-save effort.

New Paltz contests Drew University on Wednesday, Oct. 13, in its home finale. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. on Alumni Field.
