POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Despite an early goal by sophomore forward
Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y.), the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team fell, 3-1, to non-conference rival Vassar College in the Hawks' season opener on Wednesday afternoon at Gordon Field.
Abravanel scored in the ninth minute, outrunning the defense to goal and burying a rebound. On the afternoon, she uncorked six shots, five of which were on target.
The Brewers (1-0-0) answered with scores by Carolyn Demougeot and Gavriella Kaplan in the 26th and 32nd minutes, respectively, and carried a 2-1 edge into the intermission. Demougeot put the game on ice in the 60th minute, netting her second goal of the contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y.) faced a barrage of shots in net and made a game-high six saves. Her counterpart, Lexi Hutton, turned away five Hawk shot attempts.
“I feel like we should have scored a few more goals,” head coach
Colleen Bruley said. “Vassar was a very strong team, and this was a good test for us.”
The Hawks (0-1-0) seek to bounce back on Friday when they take on the University of Scranton on Alumni Field at 4:30 p.m.
