NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team fell, 1-0, to the No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology (2-0-0) in a single-overtime non-conference contest held Saturday afternoon on Alumni Field.
The Ducks established a scoring opportunity in the fourth minute when Stephen Dunbar ripped a shot at the Hawks' keeper, junior Thomas Viscardi (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.). He made a diving save, extinguishing the scoring chance.
The Hawks countered in the eight minute when junior forward
Jimmy Altadonna (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) fired a shot at the crossbar from the close right wing. Senior forward
Dave Gardiner (Malta, N.Y.) collected the rebound and uncorked a shot on goal, but the Stevens keeper came up with the save.
The Hawks held the shot margin advantage in the first half, 10-6.
In the 47th minute, junior midfielder
Tommy Garafola (Richmond Hill, N.Y.) fired a free kick just high of the crossbar. Seconds later, junior midfielder
Michael Santalesa (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) set up for a corner, and Garafola missed wide.
The Hawks almost struck again in the 56th minute when Altadonna found sophomore forward
Harrison Lane (Glenmont, N.Y.), who shot wide left from inside the box.
The Ducks secured the victory in the 94th minute when Nolan Sandberg found the back of the net off of an Anthony Roden assist.
New Paltz finished with a 20-14 margin in shots and an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
In between the posts for the Ducks, Zack Carr compiled seven saves in 94 minutes of play.
Viscardi ended the afternoon with three saves in net for the Hawks.
New Paltz (1-1-0) returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Madison, N.J., to take on Fairleigh Dickinson-College at Florham. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
