Women’s Swimming Collects Six Runner-up Finishes in 124-76 Loss to Stevens

Meet Results

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior Christine Rieth (Penfield, N.Y.) captured two second-place finishes, but the firepower of the Stevens Institute of Technology (3-0) proved too much for the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team (5-3), as the Hawks fell, 124-76, in a dual meet in Hoboken, N.J., on Saturday afternoon.

Rieth checked in at 25.07 in the 50 freestyle and followed that swim up with a 54.72 performance in the 100 freestyle.

Senior Becky Baker (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was the lone individual event winner for the Hawks, clocking the top time in the 100 breaststroke at 1:09.44. The 200 freestyle relay quartet of senior Allison Wells (Shelton, Conn.), sophomore Katina Lown (Bohemia, N.Y.), senior Marissa Morris (Toms River, N.J.) and Rieth uncorked an event-winning 1:43.06 to score first-place points as well. The Stevens “A” squad charted a 1:41.65 in the event, but the Ducks swam the relay as an exhibition entry.

Other second-place performances came from senior Jessica Lester (Long Beach, N.Y.) in the 1000 freestyle (10:55.91), freshman Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J.) in the 200 freestyle (2:03.19), sophomore Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) in the 100 backstroke (1:03.33) and sophomore Anna Jakubek (Harriman, N.Y.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.02). Jakubek scored second-place points in the 100 breaststroke due to Stevens marking its three entries as exhibition.

New Paltz now turns its attention to preparing for the 2011 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships, which runs from Feb. 9-12 at the Flickinger Aquatic Center in Buffalo, N.Y. The swimming events are set for Feb. 10-12, with prelims starting at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m. each day.
