Michael Santalesa (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) used a pass from senior midfielder
Joe Emberger (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) in the 107th minute to net the game-winner in the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team's (7-8-1, 3-4-1 SUNYAC) 2-1 double-overtime triumph over SUNY Fredonia (11-6-0, 4-4-0 SUNYAC) on Friday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, keeping the Hawks' playoff hopes alive.
New Paltz will have to win against Buffalo State tomorrow to have any shot at making the SUNYAC Tournament, while the Hawks will need help from SUNY Oneonta. Fredonia needs to tie or lose to the Red Dragons for New Paltz to have a chance at qualifying for the conference tournament.
Emberger was involved with both goals on the afternoon, as he also was credited with the assist on the game-tying score in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
After New Paltz took three shots to the Blue Devils' one in the two overtime periods, Santalesa put away the game-winning marker—the second of his career—at 106:21.
Senior forward
Jimmy Altadonna (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) kept the Hawks in the game late in the second stanza, as he converted on an Emberger feed at 82:30. Emberger threaded a pass in between the defenders, and Altadonna fired home a shot from short range to knot the tally at 1-all.
Both teams were unable to find the net in the first half, but a Hawk own goal put the Blue Devils on the board at 67:44. On the game, New Paltz held a commanding 31-13 edge in shots and took six corner kicks to Fredonia's five.
Freshman goalkeeper
Andres Montoya (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) earned his first career victory in between the pipes for the Hawks, turning aside two shots in 106:21 of work. Bobby McGinnis made a game-high eight stops in goal for the Blue Devils and shouldered the loss.
New Paltz looks to potentially lock up a berth in the SUNYAC Tournament tomorrow afternoon in Buffalo, N.Y., taking on Buffalo State at 1 p.m. in a SUNYAC tilt.
