Hawk Women’s Soccer Ties Program Record for Wins in a Season in 2-0 Victory over Fredonia

Box Score Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (11-5-1, 6-2-0 SUNYAC) defeated SUNY Fredonia (9-7-0, 5-3-0 SUNYAC), 2-0, on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field, clinching a bid in the 2011 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Soccer Championship Tournament while also tying a program record with 11 single-season victories.

New Paltz previously earned 11 wins in 1999. That year, the team finished 11-9-2 overall and qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Tournament.

Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) earned her 10th shutout of the season, extending her single-season program record. Vega saved three shots on the afternoon, while her Fredonia counterpart, Meaghan Meszaros, stopped six attempts.

Freshman midfielder Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) opened the scoring at 25:10, playing a pass from junior forward Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and scoring from the left side of the box to the right corner of net.

The Hawks showed offensive aggressiveness, outshooting the Blue Devils, 10-1, in the first half. That aggressiveness paid off at 34:44, when senior defender Shannon Cobb (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) took control of a defensive clear of a corner kick and deposited it into the right-hand side of the goal for a 2-0 New Paltz lead, ending the scoring on the afternoon.

The Hawks ultimately outshot the Blue Devils by a margin of 18-7, while also earning more corner kicks, 6-3.

New Paltz finishes both its regular-season and conference schedule on Saturday, Oct. 22, when it takes on Buffalo State at Alumni Field at 1 p.m. With a win or a tie, the Hawks ensure themselves at least a No. 2 in the SUNYAC Championship Tournament. With a head-to-head victory over current top-seeded SUNY Cortland earlier in the season, New Paltz still could earn the top overall seed with a victory and a Cortland loss to SUNY Oswego.
