Box Score Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Marc Zeyak scored 46 seconds into the second overtime period, lifting non-conference Union (N.Y.) College (6-0-0) to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (3-4-0) on Saturday afternoon in the Hawks' 2011 home opener at Alumni Field.

Nick Vozella paced the Dutchmen with a goal and an assist. His pass set up the contest's game-winning score.

New Paltz played a man down for the final 20 minutes of the second half after a red card was issued. Despite outshooting the Dutchmen, 14-10, in regulation, Union held a 5-2 edge in shots in the two overtime periods.

Freshman midfielder Stephen Browne (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) scored the game's first goal at 42:40, playing a ball off of a defender and lofting a shot over the Union goalkeeper. With the clock winding down in the second half, Vozella cashed in on pass from Kevin Giron, firing home a shot from the left side of the box.

Neither team put a shot on frame in the first overtime period, but Vozella set up Zeyak with a centering pass in the first minute of the second overtime stanza, and Zeyak uncorked a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced into the goal, keeping Union's record untarnished on the season.

Mike Szczesniak earned the win in net for the Dutchmen, halting one shot in 33:54 scoreless minutes of spot duty. Starter Adam Margulies did not earn a decision, making three saves and allowing one goal in 66:52 of work. Sophomore goalkeeper Conor Power (White Plains, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) suffered the loss, turning aside two shots and yielding two scores.

On the game, New Paltz outshot Union, 16-15, and the Dutchmen took seven corner kicks to the Hawks' three.

New Paltz returns to the pitch tomorrow afternoon across the Hudson River, squaring off with regional foe Bard College at 1 p.m. in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
