New Paltz Women’s Soccer Continues Shutout Streak With 3-0 Victory Over Oswego

Box Score Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Impressive performances by junior midfielder Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and a tough defensive front powered the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (6-2-1, 2-0-0 SUNYAC) to its third straight shutout victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating SUNY Oswego (6-3-0, 0-2-0 SUNYAC), 3-0, at the Turf Field in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.

Bowling netted both the first and last goals of the game for New Paltz on five shots, raising her season goal total to four, a career-high.

Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) was able to stop two of Oswego's seven shots on the day. In doing so, Vega recorded her fifth shutout of the season and extended her streak of consecutive shutout minutes to 419:21. The streak includes New Paltz's previous two victories against SUNY Cortland and Bard College, a tie with Ramapo College and the final minutes of a win over Carthage College.

Bowling started the Hawks' scoring at 37:54, when she took a pass from freshman midfielder Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) and struck it past the keeper to give New Paltz a lead it would never relinquish.

Junior forward Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip) got involved in the scoring action at 55:12, when she was able to make good off a pass from junior forward Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) from inside the box. Within a minute, Bowling was at it again, hammering home a cross from Abravanel at close range of Oswego goalkeeper Emily Varonier.

The game was played and called very cleanly as New Paltz was not charged with a foul, while Oswego was only assessed three. The Hawks edged the Lakers in shots taken, 32-7, as well as corner kicks, 6-1.

The Hawks next see action on Wednesday, Sept. 28, when they square off against non-conference Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y., at 3:30 p.m.
