Shorthanded Hawk Men’s Soccer Team Knocks Off No. 13 Stevens, 1-0

Box Score Box Score

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Despite sustaining a red card midway through the second half—which required the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team to play a man down for the remainder of the contest—the Hawks (1-1-0) shook the NCAA Division III men's soccer landscape up by upsetting the No. 13 Stevens Institute of Technology (1-1-0) by a 1-0 final on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

The victory was also monumental in that it served as head coach Gene Ventriglia's first career win at the helm of the New Paltz men's soccer program.

After a scoreless first half that saw each team shoot four times, New Paltz came out firing in the early moments of the second period. Senior forward Jimmy Altadonna (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) ripped off a shot from the right wing that hit the left post and went in just 56 seconds into the second half, which gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

At 70:01, however, Altadonna was issued a red card, which took him out of the game and forced New Paltz to play shorthanded down the stretch. In total, seven cards were given on the afternoon—four to the Hawks and three to the Ducks.

In the 71st and 89th minutes, Stevens put shots on frame, but sophomore goalkeeper Conor Power (White Plains, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) turned both away to preserve a clean sheet. A header shot by the Ducks in the last minute of play that went high served as Stevens' final opportunity of the match to score, and the Hawks held on for the win.

Power picked up the victory in goal after making two saves across a full 90 minutes of action, while Paul Killian halted a game-high four shots in the loss.

On the afternoon, Stevens held the upper hand in shots, 12-8, and corner kicks, 4-1. However, the Ducks put just two shots on frame, while five the Hawks' eight attempts were on goal.

New Paltz looks to build upon its momentum on Tuesday, Sept. 6, when it takes on Skidmore College at 7 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
