BRADENTON, Fla. – Solid performances all around helped the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team place first out of two teams at the Bradenton Invitational on Wednesday evening, as the Hawks topped the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 211-109. The meet was scored in an invitational format and was swum in a 50-meter pool.
New Paltz won three of the four events contested, with junior
Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central), junior
Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and senior
Christine Rieth (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) accounting for those victories. Marshall posted a 33.14 in the 50 butterfly, Suzuka clocked a 34.63 in the 50 backstroke and Rieth registered a 29.12 in the 50 freestyle.
Marshall added a second-place finish in the 50 breaststroke (41.01), while sophomore
Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) placed second in the 50 backstroke (36.23) and third in the 50 freestyle (31.18). Freshman Katherine Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) picked up a pair of second-place finishes, charting times of 33.28 and 30.51 in the 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle, respectively.
Sophomore
Ali Smoak (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and junior
Anna Jakubek (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) rounded out the Hawk swimmers that placed among the top three, as Smoak took third in the 50 butterfly (33.87), while Jakubek ranked third in the 50 breaststroke (41.49).
New Paltz returns to action on Friday, Jan. 6, as it takes on the Savannah College of Art and Design at 1 p.m. in Savannah, Ga.
