Hawk Men’s Soccer Upsets Brockport, 1-0; Advances to SUNYAC Semifinals

Box Score

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Mateo Cordini (Buenos Aires, Argentina/San Martin de Tours) beat goalkeeper Casey Sullivan to lift the sixth-seeded State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (11-7-1, 4-5-0 SUNYAC) to a 1-0 upset victory over No. 3 The College at Brockport (8-8-1, 6-2-1 SUNYAC) in the quarterfinal round of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament on Saturday at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field. The Hawks advance to the semifinals to take on No. 2 SUNY Oneonta (11-5-1, 7-2-0 SUNYAC).

The win marks the first SUNYAC Tournament victory for New Paltz since the 2004 season, when they defeated Buffalo State, 1-0, in double overtime of the tournament play-in game to advance to the semifinals.

Cordini received a feed from sophomore forward Stephen Browne (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) at the top of the box, spun, and then fired one past Sullivan for the only goal of the game. Recently named to the All-SUNYAC Third Team, Cordini now has five goals in his first season in the blue and orange.

Sophomore goalkeeper Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) was a force in the net, making nine saves without allowing a score to earn his fourth shutout and seventh victory of the season. Sullivan shouldered the loss, stopping five shots while allowing the winning goal.

Brockport defeated the Hawks, 5-2, back on Sept. 29. Determined to outplay the Golden Eagles this time around, the Hawks held an 18-16 advantage in shots. Brockport held the edge in shots on goal, 9-6, but Domino's strong play neutralized the deficit. Brockport also led in corner kicks by a 6-5 margin.

The Hawks advance to a semifinal matchup with SUNY Oneonta to be played on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m. The Red Dragons defeated New Paltz, 1-0, on Oct. 13 at Alumni Field. This time around, the Hawks travel to Oneonta with the momentum of four-consecutive victories in which they allowed just one goal (which came on a penalty kick).
