FREDONIA, N.Y. – After playing to a 2-2 tie after two overtime periods, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (12-5-2, 4-4-1 SUNYAC) fell after seven rounds of penalty kicks, 3-2, to SUNY Fredonia (12-3-3, 6-2-1 SUNYAC) in the quarterfinal round of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Soccer Championship Tournament on Saturday at University Stadium. The penalty kick shootout loss eliminates the Hawks from the SUNYAC Tournament.
After falling behind early in the game on Kristi Putzig's score in the eighth minute, the Hawks picked up goals from freshman forward
Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) in the 64th minute, and from senior forward
Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip) in the 70th minute to take a 2-1 lead in the second half. However, in the waning seconds of regulation, Fredonia's Katie Kleine deflected a pass in the box from Reilly Condidorio past senior goalkeeper
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) to knot the score at two apiece.
Both teams had chances to score in the overtime periods that ensued, but strong defensive play kept the score tied and sent the game to a penalty kick shootout. Both teams had a rough go in the shootout, with just two goals reaching the back of the net for each team in six rounds of penalty kicks. After goalkeeper Meaghan Meszaros made a save in the seventh round, Fredonia scored to win the shootout and advance to the SUNYAC semifinals, where the Blue Devils will face off with SUNY Oneonta.
Vega made five saves while allowing two goals over 110 minutes to add a tie to her season record. Meszaros stopped three shots and gave up a pair of goals on the afternoon.
Abravanel's goal was her 10th of the season, which ties her for second on the program single-season record list. It was also the 25th goal of her career at New Paltz, tying senior forward
Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) for the program career record. She also holds the single-season records in assists (8) and points (28), and the career records in assists (14) and points (64).
Weir's goal was the seventh of her freshman season, tying her for second on the team in the 2012 campaign.
Fredonia outshot the Hawks, 18-14, including a 7-5 shots on goal edge. New Paltz took the advantage in corner kicks, 8-5.
The defending SUNYAC champions end their season after reaching the SUNYAC Tournament for a program-best three straight years. Head coach
Colleen Bruley has led the Hawks to seven tournament appearances, a feat which they had accomplished just once prior to her arrival in New Paltz. The 12 victories earned this season are the second-most in program history to last year's 14.
In addition to Abravanel's records, Vega set a new program mark in shutouts. She finishes her career at New Paltz with 33 blank slates.
