Box Score
NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Two first half goals set the tone as the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (9-2-1, 3-1-1 SUNYAC) took down SUNY Plattsburgh (5-7-0, 1-3-0 SUNYAC), 3-1, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Friday at Kaplan Field, located on the campus of Mount Saint Mary College.
In the 16th minute, senior forward
Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) was on the receiving end of a corner kick at the top of the box. She played the ball toward the goal, where senior forward
Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip) found it and fired to the top-left corner of the net to take an early 1-0 lead. Just eight minutes later, senior defender
Emily Rokitowski (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum) deflected senior defender
Gabby Martino's (Islip, N.Y./Islip) shot from 18 yards out to the right post to push the Hawk lead to two.
Plattsburgh took some of the momentum away from the Hawks with a goal just six minutes into the second half. After a bunch of back and forth action in front of the New Paltz net, Plattsburgh's Cammey Keyser found the ball with an open net in front of her and fired home to cut the New Paltz lead to one. The Hawks recovered with lock down defense the rest of the half, and added a goal by Kondelka in the 86th minute to ice the game.
Senior goalkeeper
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) earned her seventh win of the season, making four saves and allowing just one goal. Plattsburgh's Danielle Schmitt suffered the loss after allowing three goals and stopping two shots.
Abravanel and Kondelka each picked up their sixth goal of the season, while Rokitowski's was her second of the year. Senior midfielder
Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y./Islip) added an assist on the afternoon on the pass that led to Kondelka's goal.
Plattsburgh held a 15-10 advantage in shots on the afternoon, but both squads were even with five shots on net. New Paltz also had all of the corner kicks in the game with seven.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow, Oct. 6, with a home SUNYAC contest against SUNY Potsdam. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Turf Field.
