Yuka Suzuka Hits NCAA “A” Cut in 100 Backstroke on Day 2 of SUNYACs; Women’s Swimming in Fourth

Meet Results

BUFFALO – Junior Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) of the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team set a program, conference meet and conference overall record in the 100 backstroke Friday night during day two of the 2012 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center. The Hawks finished the second day of the three-day meet fourth out of nine teams with 337.5 points.

Suzuka covered the 100 backstroke in an event-winning and NCAA automatic cut time of 55.53, which won the event by more than three seconds. Her swim erased the program and conference overall record of 56.33, which Michelle Coombs set in 2007. Suzuka's performance also wiped out the conference meet record of 57.68, which Claudine Gruver of New Paltz set in 1999. In addition to setting multiple records, that swim gave Suzuka the conference title for the third time in as many years.

After day two, SUNY Geneseo leads with 472 points, while SUNY Cortland sits in second with 436.5 points. SUNY Fredonia (400), New Paltz (337.5), SUNY Oneonta (205), The College at Brockport (179), SUNY Oswego (167), Buffalo State (124) and SUNY Potsdam (90) round out the remainder of the field.

Suzuka, junior Anna Jakubek (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury), junior Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) and senior Christine Rieth (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) kicked off the evening session with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay, as the quartet covered the event in 1:47.27. That time fell just short of the NCAA provisional cut standard of 1:47.16.

Sophomore Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) successfully defended her title in the 400 individual medley, using a strong final 100 to prevail with an NCAA provisional cut time of 4:36.65.

In the 100 butterfly, Marshall reset her program record in a second-place effort, as she charted a 58.58. Her swim improved upon her former program mark of 58.91, which she set earlier this year at the ECAC Winter Swimming & Diving Championships. Senior Amanda Cloer (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) scored points in the consolation final, clocking in at 1:02.57 for 14th.

New Paltz picked up key points in the 200 freestyle, as three different swimmers scored. Sophomore Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) registered a runner-up time of 1:54.86 in the event, while Rieth stopped the clock at 1:55.91 to place fourth. Freshman Katherine Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) represented the Hawks in the consolation final, recording a 14th-place standard of 2:01.29.

Two swimmers scored points for New Paltz in the 100 breaststroke, with Jakubek making the top heat and scoring eighth-place points (1:10.37) and freshman Colleen Stewart (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) taking the consolation final with a time of 1:09.91 (ninth overall).

Beyond Suzuka in the 100 backstroke, Scalise went a 1:01.59, which was good for 10th place.

Finally, the New Paltz women capped off the night in the 800 freestyle relay, as the foursome of Scalise, Rieth, Buyes and Allocco combined for a second-place time of 7:50.35.

The meet concludes tomorrow, with the preliminary heats starting at 10 a.m. and finals beginning at 6 p.m. Tomorrow's swimming events include: the 1,650 freestyle, the 200 backstroke, the 100 freestyle, the 200 breaststroke, the 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay.
