NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – After a scoreless first half, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (5-3-1) netted four second-half goals en route to defeating non-conference Bard College (2-6-1), 4-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field. Sophomore defender
Brian Spina (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) had a goal and an assist for New Paltz.
New Paltz held a 13-4 edge in shots in the first stanza but had nothing to show for it, as the two teams entered the halftime intermission deadlocked at zero. That changed in the 50th minute, when Spina ripped a shot in the box that was saved by the Bard goalkeeper, Gabe Rudd. The ball then deflected off a Bard player's hand in the box, giving Spina a penalty-kick opportunity. Spina beat the keeper with a shot that tucked inside the left post, and the Hawks took a 1-0 lead.
More than 10 minutes went by until New Paltz doubled its cushion, as sophomore forward
Stephen Browne (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) scored unassisted at 63:37. Brown drove down the right wing, beat the goalkeeper, and he put a ball that rolled into the left-hand side of the net.
With less than two minutes remaining, the Hawks scored twice more. Junior forward
Mike Jacobsen (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) headed in a pass from Spina, who fed the ball in from the right flank, in the 89th minute, and freshman midfielder
Anton Herodes (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) registered his first collegiate goal in the final minute, receiving a feed from freshman forward
Angelo DiMatteo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun).
The Hawks held a commanding 36-5 edge in shots and a 10-0 margin in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Andres Montoya (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) earned the win in net for the Hawks without facing a single shot on frame, while his Raptor counterpart, Rudd, made seven stops in the loss.
New Paltz faces a tough trip to the Rochester area this weekend, as it contests SUNY Geneseo on Friday, Sept. 28, at 4 p.m. before facing The College at Brockport on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. Both tilts are State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games.
