In the 65th minute, senior forward
Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip) took the ball into space down the right wing and fired a cross to senior forward
Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y./Islip), who was wide open inside the box, and then beat Union goalkeeper Kayla Marti with a low shot to tie the game at one. Bowling's goal was her third in as many games, and Abravanel's assist was her second of the season.
The game went on without a score until the 103rd minute, when Union's Melissa Mansfield deflected a corner kick off her back and into the net for the game winner.
The pair of goals scored by Union were the first two that senior goalkeeper
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) has given thus far in the 2012 campaign. Vega stopped a season-high seven shots en route to her first loss of the early season.
New Paltz had an opportunity to win early in the first extra period when sophomore forward
Sarah Painter (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) blasted a curling shot from 20 yards out, but it was knocked aside by Marti to keep the game alive.
Union's Laura Snowden gave the Dutchwomen the lead in the 40th minute with her second netter of the year off a pass from Nicole Collins.
The Hawks were outshot by the Dutchwomen, 17-13, in the loss. Bowling and sophomore midfielder
