Women's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Overtime Loss Against Potsdam

Box Score

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team battled host SUNY Potsdam for 98 minutes and 19 seconds, but fell victim to an overtime goal from Potsdam freshman forward Hailey Hollenbeck and dropped a heart breaking 1-0 overtime loss in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest on Friday afternoon at Maxcy Turf Field.

Hollenbeck earned Potsdam the victory when she dribbled past the first New Paltz defender and made several nifty moves with the ball to face Hawks sophomore goalie Krysten Kane (Macedon, N.Y./Wayne Central) one-on-one. Hollenbeck adeptly launched the ball into the upper portion of the net for the Potsdam victory, the first over New Paltz since a 4-3 road victory in 2003. Kane, who was strong throughout, made three saves for New Paltz.

The loss drops New Paltz to 2-8-3, 0-4-1 in SUNYAC play. Potsdam improves to 5-6-1 overall, 2-2 SUNYAC. The Hawks travel to SUNY Plattsburgh for a 1:00 p.m. game. Potsdam remains at home, hosting Oneonta at 1:00 p.m.

The Hawks came out of the gates with a purpose and controlled tempo in the first half, owning an 11-2 shot advantage. Potsdam freshman goalie Michaela Cole was up to the task, however, making eight saves in earning her second consecutive shutout.

In the first half, Cole was able to tip or smother several New Paltz attacks on goal. She stopped a threat from junior midfielder Rebecca Rothman (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside), whose shot went off Cole's hands and drifted back in front of the net where a Potsdam defender was able to clear it safely. Hawks sophomore midfielder Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) had her point blank attempted stopped by Cole with under six minutes remain until intermission. Gandolfo had three shots in the game, Rothman had a pair.

Potsdam was able to apply its own offensive pressure. Freshman midfielder Kaylen Van Wagner had two strong scoring opportunities in the second half, one coming at the 48 minute mark when her shot hit the post. Another Van Wagner attempt came just under eight minutes later when her free kick on goal was stymied by Kane.
