Women's Soccer Handed Tough Overtime Loss Against Drew, 2-1

Box Score

MADISON, N.J. – Drew University senior midfielder Liz Loiodice scored with 2:29 left in the second overtime to lift her team to a 2-1 victory over the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team in non-conference play on Wednesday night at Ranger Stadium.

For the majority of overtime, it appeared the contest was headed for a stalemate. In the first 10 minute extra session, neither team was able to muster much offense, though Drew did fire off three shots. In the final four minutes of the second session, however, Drew pressured the New Paltz defense, which stayed resilient despite facing three shots in quick succession. But with time running out in the contest, Loiodice earned her 10th goal of the season off a slip pass from sophomore forward Emma Campbell, and subsequently lifted her shot from 12-feet out and over the head of Hawks sophomore goalie Krysten Kane (Macedon, N.Y./Wayne Central). Kane faced 22 Drew shots and made nine saves.

For New Paltz, which falls to 2-10-3, it was the fourth double session overtime game of the season and fifth overtime game overall. Drew, which improves to 11-1, kept its eight game winning streak intact, a streak that began on September 8 with a 1-0 victory over Ramapo College. Both teams resume conference play this Saturday. New Paltz hosts SUNY Oneonta in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play at Alumni Field at 1:00 p.m., while Drew hosts Goucher College in Landmark Conference action at 1:00 p.m.

Very little statistical action took place in the first half, as the Hawks handcuffed Drew with tight defensive pressure and limited opportunities. The teams combined for only five shots and three corner kicks.

Drew broke the scoreless deadlock at the 67:26 mark of the second half when sophomore midfielder Mel Santos connected on a header off the back post following a corner kick, appropriately initiated by Loiodice.

The Hawks responded admirably and quickly -- just three minutes later. At the 70:19 mark, junior midfielder Eleni Anselmi (Garnersville, N.Y./North Rockland) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season on a shot taken from the top of the box that sailed into the right corner of the goal.

New Paltz had seven shots in the contest. Drew split its goalie duties, with senior Agata Dera playing the final 58:10 and earning the victory with two saves.
