Men's Soccer Edged In Final Overtime Seconds by Mount Saint Mary

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College junior forward Matt Garcia connected on a free kick with 19 seconds to play in the second overtime to lead the visiting Knights to a 2-1 victory over the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play at Alumni Field.

Garcia's goal, which looped into the left side of goal past Hawks junior goalie Andres Montoya (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue), put a dampener on the final home game of the season for five graduating New Paltz seniors. The Hawks had a good look on goal just seconds before Garcia's tally, but freshman defender Paul Wehner (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland), had his shot stopped by freshman MSMC tender Tyler Biscone, one of five saves he made in the contest.

The heartfelt loss leaves the Hawks at 4-10-3 on the season heading into a pair of important State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games this Friday at 3:00 p.m. against SUNY Fredonia and at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday against Buffalo State. Mount Saint Mary improves to 10-3-1 and next hosts Purchase College in a Skyline Conference contest on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The Hawks played a terrific first half, and in particular Montoya, who made five first half saves. In the 36th minute of the game he weathered back-to-back assaults on goal and helped New Paltz take a 1-0 lead. Montoya had six total saves, but none in overtime.

New Paltz broke through in the 19th minute when junior midfielder Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) accepted a nifty feed from junior defender Stephen Browne (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) and slid his shot past Biscone with a driving shot from 15-feet out. Five minutes prior to Johnson's goal, freshman midfielder Sam Spring (Long Island City, N.Y./NYC Lab for Collaborative Studies) launched a beautiful header on goal that just sailed high of becoming the game's first goal. It punctuated a strong first half in which the Hawks held strong against a talented Mount Saint Mary team.

The Hawks held their lead with a strong midfield and defensive presence until the game's 70th minute. Mount Saint Mary senior midfielder Sean Lockwood evened the contest at 1-1 when sprinting along the left side of the field and knocking home the game equalizer with a blast into the right corner of the New Paltz goal.

Both teams took 17 shots. MSMC held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
