Despite Loss, Men's Soccer Still Remains in SUNYAC Playoff Picture

Box Score

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Despite suffering a 3-2 loss to SUNY Fredonia on Friday afternoon, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team still remains in the hunt for a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoff berth. The scenario plays out like this: the Hawks need a victory over Buffalo State tomorrow and a SUNY Geneseo loss against SUNY Plattsburgh.

Should the Hawks defeat Buffalo State and Geneseo lose its home contest against Plattsburgh – a Geneseo tie would not suffice point-wise— and should Fredonia lose or tie to SUNY Oneonta, then New Paltz would earn the sixth seed in the SUNYAC playoffs, albeit a different scenario from last year when the Hawks won their last two conference games to clinch a playoff spot. This outcome was made possible by Geneseo losing to SUNY Potsdam, 1-0, on Friday afternoon.

The Hawks 4-11-3, 2-5-1 SUYNAC, travel to Buffalo State (7-8-1, 3-5) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game. Fredonia (5-10-1, 2-5-1) hosts SUNY Oneonta. Plattsburgh, which is third in SUNYAC standings, has a 11-4-1, 5-3 record heading into its important contest against Geneseo.

Fredonia scored the first two goals of the game in the first 22 minutes of the contest to build a quick 2-0 lead. Senior midfielder Chase Lipshie and freshman midfielder Sam Greco both scored their second goals of the season, at 9:34 and 21:31, respectively. In the 31st minute, the Hawks got on the board with a goal by sophomore midfielder Jake Falk (Jericho, N.Y./Jericho), his second of the season. Senior midfielder Hobie Ramin (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) earned the assist.

The Knights would surge ahead, 3-1, in the 56th minute on the strength of a bicycle-style goal by sophomore midfielder Paul Reinis, assisted by senior midfielder Jay Dry, his second of the contest.

The Hawks would make the game interesting as in the 70th minute, junior defender Brian Spina (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) scored his first goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Bernardo Menendez (Buenos Aires, Argentina/San Martin de Tours), who leads the Hawks with five assists this season.

The Hawks held a narrow 13-12 edge in shots. Fredonia earned a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior goalie Steven Domino (Valarie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) made four saves in the contest. His counterpart, junior A.J. Grecco, made five saves.
