Men’s Soccer’s Season Ends with 3-0 Loss to Buffalo State

Box Score

BUFFALO – Needing a win and some help on the final day of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team came up short against Buffalo State, falling by a 3-0 final at Coyer Field. The loss knocked the Hawks out of the SUNYAC playoff picture, and the game served as their season finale.

New Paltz received the help it needed off the Coyer Field pitch, as both SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Fredonia lost to keep the Hawks' playoff hopes alive. Instead, Buffalo State served as the beneficiary to both those teams losing, as it vaulted into the SUNYAC Tournament and picked up the No. 5 seed.

New Paltz finishes its season at 4-12-3 overall and 2-6-1 in the SUNYAC. Buffalo State rises to 8-8-1 overall and 4-5-0 in the conference. The Bengals wrap up their regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. against Nazareth College. Buffalo State competes in the quarterfinal round of the SUNYAC Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m., visiting fourth-seeded SUNY Plattsburgh.

Buffalo State controlled the game's tempo—particularly in the second half—and finished with a 20-7 edge in shots. New Paltz, however, outgained the Bengals in corner kicks, 6-3.

The Bengals got on the board at 19:42, as senior midfielder Erik Tellgren deposited a rebound off a shot from senior midfielder C.J. Scirto into the goal. Scirto contributed to one more score before halftime, notching an assist in the 43rd minute. He fed senior forward Andrew Dugan, who chipped the ball over the goalkeeper

Buffalo State tacked on an insurance goal just 4:47 into the second half, as Tellgren ripped a cross from the left flank that sophomore defender Keegan Lezama buried into the net. The Bengals continued to apply pressure throughout the second half, as they collected 12 shots during the period.

Junior goalkeeper Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) was charged with the loss, making seven saves and yielding three goals in 70:48 of action. Junior goalkeeper Andres Montoya (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) took over in between the posts went unchallenged in the final 19:12 of play. Freshman goalkeeper Robby Kuhnle notched a two-save shutout for Buffalo State.
