Men's Swimming Hosts SUNY Oswego In SUNYAC Competition On Saturday

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team begins competition against State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rivals on Saturday, Nov. 16, when the Hawks host SUNY Oswego at 1 p.m. at Elting Pool.

Records: New Paltz is 0-1 entering Saturday's meet, while Oswego is 3-1.

Scouting the Hawks: New Paltz is hosting its second dual meet of the 2012-13 season following the Ramapo College meet back on Nov. 2… The Hawks faced some of the top teams in NCAA Division III last weekend, competing at the two-day New York University, which included host NYU and Stevens Institute of Technology… The Hawks gained valuable experience racing in a prelim-final format against many swimmers who will qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships… In last Saturday's racing, the Hawks were competitive, getting strong performances from senior Matt Distler (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) and sophomore Rod Taskindoust (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North)... Distler was only half of a second off the sixth-place finisher in the 100 freestyle with a seventh-place standard of 50.30, while Taskindoust was just a half second off of sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:51.38) and was just more than a second off of sixth place in the 100 butterfly with a seventh-place time of 57.40... On Friday, Taskindoust tied Stevens' Conor Arcuri for fifth in the 1,650 freestyle, clocking a time of 17:41.62 in the 66-lap race… Junior Jack Spader (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) finished right behind Taskindoust and Arcuri with a seventh-place time of 17:51.86… New Paltz's 400 medley relay team of Taskindoust, freshman Vitaut Gurskiy (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), sophomore Ethan Cooke (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) and Distler placed third (3:51.90), while the Hawks' 200 freestyle relay contingent of Distler, Taskindoust, senior Austin Collins (Remsenburg, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) and Cooke charted a third-place time of 1:31.83.

Scouting the Lakers: Oswego enters Saturday's meet with three straight wins, having defeated Clarkson 127-110 last Saturday… Prior to that victory, Oswego had victories over Wells (81-38) and SUNY Oneonta (130-113) … Against Clarkson, senior Tom Schmid came in first in both the 800-meter freestyle race and the 400-meter freestyle… Sophomore Austin Nau came in first for the 50-meter freestyle… Senior Logan Killian won the 100-meter backstroke… The Lakers also placed first in the 200-meter freestyle relay... Freshman Ben Hale (208. 75, 195. 90), junior Justin Berrios (188.53, 203. 25) and senior Antonio Barilla (121.40, 126.15) were the top three men's divers in the both the one meter and three meter dive.

Last Meeting: (Meet Results): On Nov. 10, 2012, the Hawks edged visiting SUNY Oswego 146-116 in their' first dual meet of the 2012-13 season at Elting Pool... New Paltz won 10 of the 14 events contested, and then sophomore Marton Keri (Budapest, Hungary/Moricz Zsigmond Gimnazium) led the way with three individual event victories… The Hawks had a quartet of multiple-event winners… Spader won both the 1,000 freestyle (10:42.28) and the 500 freestyle (5:04.56), then freshman Taskindoust took the 200 freestyle (1:49.87) and the 100 freestyle (50.02)… Keri captured the 100 breaststroke (1:01.48), the 200 breaststroke (2:15.75) and the 200 individual medley (2:04.26)... Then freshman Cooke topped the field in the 100 butterfly (57.87) and the 200 butterfly (2:10.60). 19.64).

Head Coaches: New Paltz is directed by sixth-year head coach Scott Whitbeck, while Oswego is led by seventh-year head coach Mike Holman.

What's Next: The Hawks will travel to cross river foe Vassar College for a 1 p.m. meet next Saturday at Kresge Pool... Oswego continues racing against SUNYAC teams next Saturday, hosting SUNY Brockport at Laker Pool at 1 p.m.
